Real Madrid Football Club is set to hold a key general assembly in the coming weeks that could open up its financing options and even possibly allow external investors to take a stake in a member-controlled subsidiary of the storied football club, according to 9fin sources.
A mooted corporate reorganisation, announced by president Florentino Pérez last year, could open the club up for more external investment as the it looks to compete with the financial heft of the English Premier League, one of the sources said.
To move forward with the corporate reorganisation, Pérez would first need to call a general assembly to present the details of the operation to the members. A date for the assembly is yet to be established, but is due to happen by 31 December, a second source said. The ordinary general assembly must be convened at least once a year and must be held after the end of the sporting season, according to the club’s statutes.
After that, a referendum would have to be held, requiring an absolute majority vote from the membership for the proposed ownership change to become a reality, according to website Mundo Deportivo.
